A Preview of the Coming Year

Since the PRSSA Blog launched in 2006, some major topics have been covered – from PRSA defending the profession to transparency and even the death of public relations. Now, approaching the third year of its existence, I’d like to take the blog to the next level with your help. Here are some things we’ll be working on this year:

  • Sharing knowledge. One thing that always amazes me is the depth of the organization. If you Google “PRSSA + blog,” you will find some awesome Chapters with blogs: Ohio University, University of Hawaii and UGA among the top search results. If you search “PRSSA” on Twitter, you’ll find lively discussions between members across the country. This blog will work on capturing that depth by aggregating the content that is important to you. This will help connect you with students across the country. We’ll link to posts and share insights. The Internet is a powerful tool and is helping us advance the profession and the future professional.
  • Event podcasts and video. Did you know the Society hosts nearly 20 national and regional events each year? We have National Conference, National Assembly, Leadership Rally and Regional Activities – all offering Professional Development opportunities for you. Chances are you aren’t able to attend all of them. Recap posts, videos and podcasts from those at the events will be on this blog so we’ll be able to learn together.
  • PRSA Sections. In an effort to better link PRSSA with PRSA, you’ll also being seeing posts from PRSA Professional Interest Sections. Because there are so many different forms of public relations, you’ll benefit from the varied experience of professionals in one of 19 groups.
  • Trying new things. Finally, as we learn more about blogging and social media in general, I encourage you try new things. Get your own blog – many platforms are free, such as Blogger and WordPress. Read what other people are writing. Start by finding some interesting blogs through Alltop here. Get on Twitter and follow us (@PRSSANational). Encourage your Chapter to make a video with a Flip camera and upload it to YouTube. If you need help or advice with anything, contact us. We would love to help you.

So, here’s where you come in. This blog is about you and giving you the tools you need to be successful in public relations. If you have any suggestions about what you would like to see, feel free to comment below. If you have a lot of suggestions, e-mail me (nicklucido@gmail.com) or call me (586-980-9570). I encourage you to subscribe to the blog and keep up with what’s going on.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to the coming year.

      This is awesome, I’m really looking forward to the new blog! Any way we can get the @PRSSANational tweets on the side, maybe like PRSAY?

      Hey Evan, great suggestions! We’re taking a look at some different widgets, but I think that’s a great idea. Anything else you recommend?

      Great job Nick! I really like how you even suggested websites where people can start blogging!

      Thanks Mary Rose! I can’t recommend blogging enough — it helps you improve your writing skills, teaches you how to build relationships and connects you with great people. What do you have to lose when you blog?

      When I read this post, it reminded me of a few entries from @mashable that I perused this morning (http://ow.ly/bh2A & http://ow.ly/bgZl) that referenced, among other things, @NPRnews as the ‘future of media’ highlighting the company’s focus on social media, easy access and easy share.

      This got me to thinking about your ideas… I wonder if the PRRSA blog might also benefit from a few simple additions, like easy share plug-ins like the ones found here http://speckyboy.com/2008/10/20/top-20-social-bookmaking-plugins-for-wordpress-share-your-posts/ that you can add to the footer of posts;

      …or by exploring a public relations extension or partnership with Publish2 http://www.publish2.com/ as an aggregation service, with (perhaps) a local extension (if possible) — you’d have to talk with Scott or Ryan;

      …or hosting chats like those on Twitter (#pr20chat) https://twitter.com/#search?q=%23pr20chat. Perhaps @bethharte or @prsarahevans would offer some of their insights.

      All of the suggestions you make are wonderful and should be included, I think. I only mean to include some utilities that allow users to share, contribute (other than commenting) and most importantly, interact overall.

      What do you think? 🙂

      Nice work, Nick. Great structure for this year’s blog- love the idea of hearing from each different PR sector – what other blog can you experience a little taste of everything! Looking forward to more posts.

      Mich – You rock! These are awesome ideas, and I’m on the same page with you. We’re in the process of finalizing some things, but engaging the membership is the key here. I’ll check out some of these things for sure. Thanks again!

      Katy – Thanks! Make sure to check back often!

      Kion – Thanks so much for the kind words. I can’t stress how much all of this is a team effort. It’s going to take time and patience, but I believe we can truly advance the Society by taking these steps. Thanks for stopping by!

      I can’t wait to see what happens with the blog this year — you already have some amazing ideas! I saw your response to Evan’s post about widgets ….any chance of creating a PRSSA delicious account and linking it to the blog? Or does one already exist?

      I think it’d be a great resource for enhancing blog posts and sharing information.

      I also love the idea of linking to other PRSSA Chapter’s blogs. Otterbein just started one this year and we’re always looking for ways to link to other schools.

      Keep up the good work and let me know if you’re looking for guest bloggers!

      Jeana – thanks! That’s a really great idea. It would be great to share some things that we think are important. That will help share and aggregate content. Great suggestion! In the meantime, feel free to connect with me on delicious too (username is nicklucido).

      “The Internet is a powerful tool and is helping us advance the profession and the future professional.”

      How true! The internet has really revolutionized the way we all do public relations. I remember back when the PRSSA website had barely just started!

      Congrats guys (and girls) & keep up the great work.
