The Experience of a Newcomer at a PRSSA National Event

As a new member of the Public Relations Student Society of America, I was not sure of what to expect at the 2019 National Assembly in Portland, Oregon. I understood the procedures and protocol for the actual event, however, I underestimated the level of acceptance and welcoming that this Society has for new members. The event included students from all over the U.S. as well as representatives from the international Chapters. It really showcased the dedication and commitment PRSSA members make to the Society.

Something that I took back with me to San Marcos, Texas, is the realization that diversity is vital and increasingly important in the industry we are entering. To formulate a successful campaign or represent a client’s best interest, we must be diverse and inclusive of all cultures and languages. With the addition of a position on the National Committee devoted to diversity and inclusion efforts, our Society will be able to grow and develop in ways we’ve never been able to before. It is undoubtedly a step in the right direction for PRSSA.

I am excited and eager to attend the next international PRSSA event. Learning from such driven and knowledgeable individuals motivates me to not only become more involved in my Chapter at Texas State but also within the international community of public relations students.
