Presenter: Brett Cannon, Senior Publicist at SXSW

Recap: Brett Cannon, Senior Publicist at SXSW, presented to a group of PRSSA students at the National Conference in Austin, Texas about how he manages the company’s PR efforts across 24 aspects of their Conference planning. South by Southwest is an internationally recognized music/film festival that takes place over ten days in March. It serves as a networking event that allows journalists to create conversations and to help creative people achieve their goals.

One of SXSW’s goals is to innovate and stay relevant in recognizing media opportunities. It is important to understand that everything is PR, which is the opportunity to create networks by looking at the significance and importance of the event and to understand what is happening in the media landscape. In today’s age, it is crucial to realize public perception matters and relationships are the whole ball game.

Takeaways:

  • SXSW dedicates itself to helping creative people achieve their goals
  • Innovate and stay relevant to recognize media opportunities
  • Everything is PR: the opportunity to create connections by looking at every aspect of the event
  • Just because it isn’t in your job description, doesn’t mean it’s not your job
  • Always tell the truth
