Tips For Effective Conference Networking

Attending the PRSSA International Conference is one of the best steps a public relations/communications student can take to prepare for their career. I had the opportunity to attend ICON in 2021 and 2022 and, without a doubt, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for everything I learned and everyone I met at the Conference.

I’m sure we’ve all heard that networking is an essential skill in today’s job market, especially in our industry, since public relations is all about people — meeting them, talking with them and learning from and about them. 

ICON is an event that brings public relations/communications students and professionals from around the world together, so it’s definitely a unique opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals and build meaningful relationships.

However, the idea of networking at a large, international conference can certainly seem daunting, but it does not have to be. To help you master the art of building meaningful professional connections and get the most out of PRSSA ICON 2023, I’ve compiled multiple tips on how to network effectively at the Conference.

Come Prepared With Clear Goals in Mind

Think about what you want to accomplish, who you’d like to meet and why. Your networking goals can vary based on your personal and professional needs. Having specific goals in mind will help you prepare effectively and achieve your long-term career goals. 

For instance, if your networking goal is to gain a mentor, you could attend the Connect With Champions Breakfast on Oct. 15 from 8:45–10:30 a.m. where you’ll be able to join Champions for PRSSA for a continental breakfast. Or if you are looking for an internship, you might want to prepare to connect with corporations and agencies and share your resume at the PRSSA Career Development Exhibition scheduled for Oct. 16 from 10 a.m.– 12:30 p.m.

Also, don’t forget to download the Whova app before the Conference. Students and Advisers can use the app to begin engaging with registrants, speakers and exhibitors. This is a great way to start making connections early and plan for meet-ups.

Prepare Your Elevator Pitch

You never know when you need a strong elevator pitch, so a good tip is to prepare it in advance and practice at home. 

Something I always do the day before attending a conference or networking event is stand in front of a mirror and practice delivering my pitch. You also could consider practicing with a family member, friend or mentor. I like to keep my elevator pitch conversational and focused on the value I bring rather than just listing accomplishments.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Stepping out of your comfort zone is essential for effective Conference networking. Speak with fellow PRSSA members and professionals that you don’t know. It can be intimidating to approach a bigger group. My tip is to begin by approaching individuals who are standing alone or in small groups. I know this may sound scary but remind yourself that it’s okay to feel nervous and that most people probably feel that way too. We are all there to network and meet new people as well! 

Have Some Conversation Starters Ready

Having some conversation starters ready can help you break the ice and feel more confident when initiating your interactions.

Here are some conversation starters you could use:

• Where are you from?
• What session are you most looking forward to at the Conference? 
• Have you ever attended ICON before?
• Is this your first time in Nashville?
• What do you enjoy most about being a PRSA/PRSSA member?
• Who is your role model in the industry?
• What type of position would you like to hold one day?
• What advice would you give someone entering this field?

Be an Active Listener and Ask Questions

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of focusing on listening rather than speaking. Being an active listener and asking questions is the key to building strong relationships. It shows that you’re interested in what the other person has to say and that you’re paying attention.

Some additional networking tips are to prioritize quality over quantity, bring your business cards, evaluate your personal online brand (LinkedIn in particular) and follow up after the event.

Following these tips will help you build meaningful connections and make the most out of your ICON experience. Be genuine, authentic and confident. You’ve got this!

CONSEJOS PARA REALIZAR NETWORKING EFECTIVO EN CONFERENCIAS

Asistir a la Conferencia Internacional de PRSSA es uno de los mejores pasos que una persona que estudia comunicación/relaciones públicas puede tomar para prepararse para su carrera profesional. Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a PRSSA ICON en 2021 y 2022 y, sin lugar a dudas, no estaría donde me encuentro hoy si no fuera por todo lo que aprendí y todas las personas que conocí en esta Conferencia.      

Es probable que la mayoría haya escuchado que el networking es una habilidad esencial para el mercado laboral actual. Especialmente en nuestra industria, ya que las relaciones públicas se centran en las personas: conocerlas, hablar con ellas y aprender de y sobre ellas.

ICON es un evento que reúne a estudiantes y profesionales en relaciones públicas/comunicación de todo el mundo, por lo que definitivamente es una oportunidad única para interactuar con personas con intereses similares y construir vínculos significativos.

Sin embargo, la idea de realizar networking en un gran evento internacional puede parecer abrumador, pero no tiene que serlo. Para ayudarte a dominar el arte de construir conexiones profesionales y aprovechar al máximo ICON 2023, he recopilado varios consejos sobre cómo realizar networking efectivo en la Conferencia.

Andá Preparado con un Objetivo Claro en Mente

Pensá qué querés lograr, a quién te gustaría conocer y por qué. Tus objetivos de networking pueden variar en base a tus necesidades personales y profesionales. Tener objetivos específicos en mente te ayudará a prepararte efectivamente y a alcanzar tus objetivos profesionales en el largo plazo.

Por ejemplo, si tu objetivo de networking es encontrar un mentor, podrías asistir a la sesión “Connect With Champions Breakfast” el 15 de octubre de las 8:45 a 10:30 a. m., donde podrás unirte a los Champions for PRSSA para un desayuno continental. O, si estás buscando una pasantía, tal vez podrías prepararte para conectar con organizaciones y agencias y compartir tu CV en la “PRSSA Career Development Exhibition”, programada para el 16 de octubre de 10 a. m. a 12:30 p. m.

Por otro lado, no te olvides de descargar la aplicación Whova antes de la Conferencia. Estudiantes y Advisors pueden usar la aplicación para comenzar a interactuar con las personas inscritas al evento, oradores y expositores. Esta es una excelente manera de comenzar a hacer conexiones temprano y planificar encuentros.

Prepará Tu Elevator Pitch

Nunca sabés cuándo necesitarás un elevator pitch fuerte, por lo que un buen consejo es prepararlo con antelación y practicarlo en casa.

Algo que siempre hago el día antes de asistir a una conferencia o evento de networking es pararme frente a un espejo y practicar mi pitch. También podrías considerar practicar con un familiar, amigo o mentor. Me gusta mantener mi elevator pitch de un modo conversacional y que esté centrado en el valor que aporto en lugar de simplemente enumerar mis logros.

Salí de Tu Zona de Confort

Salir de tu zona de confort es esencial para realizar networking efectivo en la Conferencia. Hablá con miembros de PRSSA y profesionales que no conozcas. Puede resultar intimidante acercarse a un grupo más grande. Mi consejo es comenzar acercándote a personas que estén solas o en grupos pequeños. Sé que esto puede parecer aterrador, pero recordá que está bien sentirse nervioso y que la mayoría probablemente también se sienta así. ¡Todas las personas estamos ahí para establecer conexiones y conocer gente nueva!

Prepará Posibles Temas Para Iniciar Conversaciones

Tener listos algunos temas para iniciar conversaciones puede ayudarte a romper el hielo y sentirte más seguro al iniciar tus interacciones.

Estos son algunos disparadores que podrías utilizar:

• ¿De dónde sos?
• ¿Qué sesión es la que más esperás en la Conferencia?
• ¿Ya has asistido a ICON?
• ¿Es tu primera vez en Nashville?
• ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de ser miembro de PRSSA/PRSA? 
• ¿Quién es tu modelo a seguir en la industria?
• ¿Qué tipo de posición te gustaría ocupar algún día?
• ¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien que se está insertando en el mercado laboral?

Sé un Oyente Activo y Hacé Preguntas.

No puedo enfatizar lo suficiente la importancia de centrarse en escuchar en lugar de hablar. Ser un oyente activo y hacer preguntas es la clave para construir relaciones sólidas. Demuestra que estás interesado en lo que la otra persona tiene que decir y que estás prestando atención.

Algunos consejos adicionales para realizar networking son priorizar la calidad sobre la cantidad, llevar tus tarjetas de presentación, evaluar tu marca personal en línea (en LinkedIn en particular) y hacer un seguimiento con las personas que conociste después del evento.
