Finding Your Public Relations Niche

Public relations professionals can delve into many different areas of the industry. College students have the opportunity to further focus their studies by adding minors to their education, which can help craft greater knowledge both personally and professionally.

Minors allow one to explore other areas of interest and link together multiple disciplines. This helps prepare one for a more specialized career path. Brian Hart, founder and President of Flackable, a national financial public relations and digital marketing agency, was a strategic communications-public relations major with a political science minor at Temple University in Philadelphia.

“American politics and modern media have always been intertwined,” said Hart. “That minor helped me further develop my understanding of public policy and current events while enhancing my skills in debate and critical thinking. Today as the founder of Flackable, I utilize my political science education every day from both a business and public relations standpoint.”

In addition, minors are an impressive asset to any resume. It shows employers that one holds a wide array of knowledge in multiple disciplines. Lizz Vo, a marketing communications specialist at Mercy Health System, studied public relations with a general business minor at Temple University. She used her minor to show employers her interest and experience with marketing. With a career in marketing communications, she is still able to utilize her public relations experience to freelance.

More importantly, minors can simply help one study what they are passionate about. Jake Hernandez studied business with an emphasis in sports and media studies at Arizona State University. By specializing his degree, it allowed him to combine his two interests and led to positions at the Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Grand Canyon University Athletics.

Adding a minor to one’s course of study helps professionally prepare you for a career by presenting employers with a variety of skill sets and knowledge. It is imperative to choose a minor that is most enjoyable and valuable personally and professionally.  

Clarissa Ford is majoring in strategic communications with a concentration in public relations and minoring in sports management at Temple University in Philadelphia. She is the assistant firm director at PRowl Public Relations, Temple’s Nationally Affiliated Student-run Firm and the director of mentorship for Temple’s PRSSA Chapter. In her spare time, she runs her own sports blog, She Knows the Rules, a website dedicated to sports written from a female’s perspective.
