How Serving on the PRSSA National Committee Has Helped Me Become the Leader I Always Aspired To Be

I joined PRSSA as a freshman in 2021. During that year, I had the opportunity to serve as my Chapter’s events committee coordinator. I remember attending the webinars and in-person events we planned and feeling beyond inspired by the professionals that spoke there. I admired these leaders’ kindness, proactivity and confidence. If I worked hard and followed my passions, I thought I could be like them in the future. At that time, I assumed I would become that kind of leader after graduation. However, my assumptions were wrong.

I started serving on the PRSSA National Committee in June 2022 as the vice president of events and fundraising. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Now that I have been a part of the National Committee for one year, I can reflect on everything that I’ve learned and accomplished so far. It is exciting to see that I am becoming the leader I always aspired to be — someone kind, proactive and confident.

I truly think that I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the opportunities PRSSA has given me. Below are some of the most impactful lessons I have learned in the past year:

Be an Active Listener.

Our Society is very diverse. For example, we all have different ages, nationalities, passions, goals and life experiences; we speak different languages, and we pursue different majors. 

Serving our Society on the National Committee has helped me realize how important it is to be an active listener to understand the emotions, thoughts and points of view of others.

Active listening should always be prioritized. It allows for better understanding, empathy and problem-solving; it leads to more meaningful connections and helps create a more inclusive environment.

Be a Lifelong Learner.

I have always considered myself to be a proactive person. However, it was not until last year that I learned what lifelong learning truly means.

When asking myself how to become a lifelong learner, I thought about attending webinars and events, reading books and taking online courses. My time on the National Committee has helped me realize that lifelong learning is much more than that — it is also about learning from the past and the people around you.

There is a quote from Albert Einstein that I love — “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning.” As leaders, it is essential to be curious, pay attention to our surroundings and take every experience as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Be confident and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

At first, serving on the National Committee was a bit challenging for me. I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina — I have always lived and studied here. Even though I learned how to speak English as a kid, sometimes it is a bit harder for me to communicate and make my points clear. Therefore, I used to feel less confident when I had to speak in English. 

PRSSA is an international Society —- we have members from all over the globe and Chapters in the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and Puerto Rico. In order to connect and have meaningful conversations with all our members, I had to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. 

I started having one-on-one and group meetings both in English and Spanish. I realized that I was being too hard on myself and understood that it wasn’t important if my pronunciation in English wasn’t perfect or if I conjugated a verb wrong.

I learned that, in fact, self-confident individuals are often better communicators. So don’t let your insecurities stop you. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone — believe in yourself and take on challenges. I can guarantee these experiences will help you become a better version of yourself and expand your knowledge and skills.

I am grateful for everything that I have learned this past year and I am excited to continue serving our Society on the National Committee for the 2023–2024 term. I can’t wait to read this article in June 2024 and reflect on how much I’ve grown.

Cómo servir en el Comité de PRSSA National me ha ayudado a convertirme en la líder que siempre he querido ser

En 2021, durante mi primer año en la universidad, me uní a PRSSA. Ese año, tuve la oportunidad de ser la coordinadora de la Comisión de Eventos en mi Capítulo. Recuerdo asistir a los webinars y eventos presenciales que organizábamos y sentirme sumamente inspirada por los profesionales que hablaban en nuestros eventos. Admiraba su amabilidad, proactividad y confianza en sí mismos. Si trabajaba duro y seguía mis pasiones, pensaba, podría ser como ellos en el futuro. En ese momento, asumía que me convertiría en ese tipo de líder después de graduarme. Sin embargo, mis suposiciones estaban equivocadas.

Comencé a servir en el Comité de PRSSA National en junio de 2022 como la vicepresidenta de eventos y recaudación de fondos. Ha sido una de las experiencias más gratificantes de mi vida. Me ha ayudado a crecer – tanto personal como profesionalmente. Ahora, que ya he sido parte del Comité por un año, puedo reflexionar sobre todo lo que he aprendido y logrado hasta ahora. Es emocionanete ver que me estoy convirtiendo en la líder que siempre he querido ser – una persona amable, proactiva y segura de sí misma.

Realmente creo que no estaría donde estoy hoy sin todas las oportunidades que PRSSA me ha brindado. Estas son algunas de las lecciones más significativas que he aprendido en el último año:

Sé un oyente activo

Nuestra Sociedad es muy diversa. Por ejemplo, todos tenemos diferentes edades, nacionalidades, pasiones, objetivos y experiencias de vida, hablamos diferentes idiomas y estudiamos distintas carreras.

Servir a nuestra Sociedad en el Comité de PRSSA National me ha ayudado a darme cuenta de lo importante que es ser un oyente activo para comprender las emociones, pensamientos y puntos de vista de los demás.

Siempre deberíamos priorizar la escucha activa. Permite una mejor comprensión, empatía y resolución de problemas, conduce a la construcción de vínculos más significativos y ayuda a crear un entorno más inclusivo.

Sé un “lifelong learner”

Siempre me he considerado una persona proactiva. Sin embargo, no fue hasta el año pasado que aprendí lo que realmente significa el “lifelong learning” (o aprendizaje constante).

Al preguntarme a mí misma cómo ser una lifelong learner, pensaba en asistir a webinars y eventos, leer libros y realizar cursos virtuales. Mi tiempo en el Comité de PRSSA National me a ha ayudado a darme cuenta de que el lifelong learning es mucho más que eso – también se trata de aprender del pasado y de las personas que te rodean.

Hay una frase de Albert Einstein que me encanta – “Aprendé del ayer, viví el hoy y tené esperanza por el mañana. Lo importante es no dejar de hacerse preguntas”. Como líderes, es fundamental ser curiosos, prestar atención a nuestros alrededores y tomar cada experiencia como una oportunidad de aprendizaje y crecimiento.

Tené confianza en vos mismo y no tengas miedo de salir de tu zona de confort

Al principio, servir en el Comité fue un poco desafiante para mí. Yo nací y crecí en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Siempre he vivido y estudiado acá. Aunque aprendí a hablar inglés cuando era muy chica, a veces es un poco más difícil para mí comunicarme y transmitir mis opiniones. Por lo tanto, solía sentirme menos segura cuando tenía que hablar en inglés.

PRSSA es una Sociedad internacional – tenemos miembros de todo el mundo y Capítulos en Estados Unidos, Argentina, Colombia, Perú y Puerto Rico. Para conectar y tener conversaciones significativas con todos nuestros miembros, tuve que salir de mi zona de confort y desafiarme a mí misma. 

Empecé a tener reuniones individuales y grupales, tanto en inglés como en español. Me di cuenta de que estaba siendo demasiado dura conmigo misma y que no era tan importante si mi pronunciación en inglés no era perfecta o si conjugaba mal un verbo.

Aprendí que, de hecho, las personas seguras de sí mismas suelen ser mejores comunicadoras. Entonces, no dejes que tus inseguridades te detengan. No tengas miedo de salir de tu zona de confort: creé en vos mismo y desafiate. Te puedo garantizar que estas experiencias te ayudarán a convertirte en una mejor versión de vos mismo y ampliar tus conocimientos y habilidades.

Estoy muy agradecida por todo lo que aprendí el año pasado y me emociona continuar sirviendo a nuestra Sociedad como parte del Comité de PRSSA National para el período 2023-2024. No puedo esperar para leer este artículo en junio del año que viene y reflexionar sobre cuánto he crecido.
