Session: How to Write a Killer Job Application

Presenter: Danny Rubin, vice president, Rubin Communications Group

Recap: In this session, we learned ways to make ourselves look better to employers when submitting a job application, cover letter, etc. The session was informative, interesting and engaging, and provided lots of great tips and tricks. Rubin told us about how he began his career and how he got to where he is now. He also reminded us to constantly take things in and learn — no matter where we are. He gave us plenty of great ideas for making ourselves stand out on paper to companies and businesses.

Rubin talked about how he helps students and what he looks for on job applications. He also shared a few stories about people he’s encountered. He stressed the importance of being clear and direct in a job application to make yourself stand out to the employer.

Takeaways:

  • Quantify your success and attach numbers to anything you talk about. Showing specific numbers makes you stand out and also makes the people looking to hire you understand what exactly your success is.
  • Do your research. Find things about the company or business you want to work for and include what you found in your interviews or emails with them. This will help enhance your outreach emails, cover letters, job interviews and phone and in-person conversations.
  • Always tell a story. Telling a recent story about challenges you’ve overcome lets employers know that you have qualities they might be looking for. This makes you look better on paper, and in some cases, can show that you’re able to take on big challenges.
