The human body is an incredibly complex and efficient system, unmatched by any man-made machine. The reason for its efficiency lies in the proper functioning of its organs, each with a specific purpose and goal. All must work together; otherwise, the body may face issues, such as disease. Similarly, a PRSSA Chapter can be compared to the body: from its beginning to its ongoing improvements.
Most Chapters improve their operations and delegate work through different committees. Common committees may include Member Services or Digital Communications Committees. The variety of committees in each Chapter depends on the group’s needs and how many people are available to manage them. However, the most important aspect of organizing these groups is that everyone works in harmony. Communication is key to ensuring everything functions smoothly.
Sometimes, we forget how much we rely on each other to complete tasks and succeed. Just like in the human body, all the committees within a Chapter need to work together. We often believe we can do everything on our own, but the truth is that a strong team is what leads us to success. Every committee or subcommittee is willing to lend a hand to those who need it. These members work together regularly, understand the obstacles we face, and understand the frustrations that come with being a student and a leader.
From my experience, asking for help is often the best solution when facing difficult moments. For example, each Chapter has its own brand, but not every member knows how to use it effectively. In the past, I realized consulting with a member of the Digital Communications Committee was far easier than trying to figure it out on my own. These actions foster meaningful connections among members from different committees.
As I mentioned earlier, communication is vital when there’s a lot to accomplish and many people involved. However, sometimes members become absorbed in their own committees or subcommittees. Motivated and happy members are great, but the main goal of being part of a Chapter is to network with the next generation of professionals. They should get to know each other. That’s why, as leaders, we need to push their boundaries and encourage them to connect with people from other areas. Likewise, members should reach out to others, ask what they do, what they enjoy, and how they can connect. You never know, those people might be your future boss or coworker. Maintaining open channels of communication is essential; members should always be aware of what’s happening within their Chapter, especially if they need someone else to complete their task before they can proceed.
But perhaps the most vital organ of a PRSSA Chapter is the spirit. The spirit is the team itself, only through dedicated teamwork can a Chapter succeed. Some Chapters have specific goals like reaching a certain membership number or organizing their District Conference. Whatever the purpose, a strong team is the backbone of success. We must take care of our teams and provide them with the best experience possible. The question is: How? How can we give our members the best experience?
The first step is to listen. Listening to their opinions, ideas, and concerns shows that we genuinely care, both professionally and personally, and allows us to make decisions not only based on leadership but also on what they truly want. Second, we need to motivate them and give them purpose. Good motivation can carry people very far, and the same applies to us. Joining PRSSA is the first step; the next is seeking out different opportunities and making the most of those experiences. We should set small milestones, assign meaningful tasks, and over time, they’ll be energized and driven. As a result, the whole Chapter will function better.
The human body is an incredibly efficient machine, yes, but it only works because of the sacrifice and hard work of its organs. Without them, the human body would never stand a chance. A PRSSA Chapter is only as strong as its people and committees. Treat them well, nurture them, help them grow and the results will be extraordinary.
