How to Engage with Your Professional Adviser / Cómo interactuar con tu Asesor Profesional
We know that one of the most important membership benefits for PRSSA members is the opportunity to connect with professionals in the field.
Sometimes, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start when it comes to securing speakers, finding mentors or needing help with your Chapter.
Did you know that each PRSSA Chapter is required to have a Professional Adviser? This person volunteers to offer guidance on your Chapter, assist with your members’ professional development, and make introductions to other professionals and more.
The Professional Adviser is different from your Faculty Adviser. The Faculty Adviser is typically a member of your college or university, and you will likely see them more because they teach on campus. The Professional Adviser is typically a full-time communications professional.
Professional Advisers volunteer to give their time to your Chapter. How can you keep them engaged and involved? Here are a few tips.
- Meetings: When new leadership comes on board, sit down with the Professional Adviser and learn about them. What are their expectations from your Chapter, and what are your Chapter’s expectations of them? Talk about the best ways to communicate. If possible, set up at least one meeting per semester with your Professional Advisor, but more frequent meetings would be ideal.
- Communication: Keep your Professional Adviser in the know about everything going on. Add them to email distribution lists, text lists, newsletters, etc. Professionals tend to live and breathe by their calendar, so setting calendar invitations to all your meetings and events can help your Professional Adviser stay more connected with your Chapter — even if they can’t attend, it will keep your Chapter on their mind. In addition, ask them to keep you updated on local PRSA Chapter events and opportunities.
- Speaking Opportunities: Invite your Professional Adviser to speak at a meeting (or attend) to get to know your Chapter. This is always great at the beginning of the year or the start of a new semester.
- Networking: Don’t be afraid to ask your Professional Adviser for recommendation on speakers or place your Chapter can visit. Ask your Adviser if your local PRSA Chapter would be willing to invite PRSSA students at an upcoming meeting or event.
- Professional Development: See if your Professional Adviser is open to reviewing resumes and LinkedIn profiles, as well as provide informational interviews and mock interviews. You can also ask your Adviser to serve as a mentor for the Bateman Case Study Competition.

Los Asesores Profesionales ofrecen su tiempo voluntariamente para apoyar a tu Capítulo. ¿Cómo puedes mantenerlos comprometidos e involucrados? Aquí tienes algunos consejos:
- Reuniones: cuando una nueva junta directiva asume el liderazgo, reúnanse con el Asesor Profesional para conocerlo. ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas del Capítulo y cuáles son tus expectativas de ellos? Hablen sobre las mejores formas de comunicarse. Si es posible, organiza reuniones de seguimiento una vez por semestre con tu Asesor Profesional.
- Comunicación: mantén informado a tu Asesor Profesional sobre todo lo que sucede. Agrégalo a las listas de distribución de correos electrónicos, listas de mensajes de texto, boletines, etc. Los profesionales suelen depender mucho de su calendario, por lo que establecer invitaciones de calendario para todas tus reuniones y ceremonias de premios puede ayudar a que tu Asesor Profesional esté más conectado con tu Capítulo. - Redes de contacto: no tengas miedo de pedirle a tu Asesor Profesional recomendaciones sobre oradores de otras industrias para tu Capítulo o sugerencias de lugares para realizar visitas corporativas. Pregunta si estarían dispuestos a llevar a estudiantes de PRSSA a una reunión local de PRSA y presentarlos a otros profesionales.
- Desarrollo profesional: consulta si tu Asesor Profesional está dispuesto a ser un recurso para que los miembros revisen currículums, perfiles de LinkedIn, entrevistas informativas y simulacros de entrevistas. También puedes preguntarles si estarían dispuestos a servir como mentores para el Bateman Case Study Competition, si tu Capítulo participa.
