Diversity in Public Relations. Adapt to a World that Doesn’t Stop Changing.

Nowadays, the world is divided into different countries in which each region is independent, where the majority do not speak the same language and do not share the same traditions. Within these regions, there is a part of the population, which acts with the purpose of integrating, normally towards a common language, same educational system, political system, etc.

This same sense of integration is what organizations want to obtain to be able to standardize their policies and processes. This is why we present recommendations, to guide them in a strategic way, with a particular emphasis on the understanding the differences that collaborators have in facing a certain structure of culture. In order for them to understand and develop personal habits that allow them to obtain the bases of organizational effectiveness.

If we currently talk about Public relations in the world in the context of globalization, we would probably talk about the same intellectual content for all, but we would be demarcating a myriad of perspectives and an infinite amount of pursuits that are specific to the place where this specialty is practiced, because relaciones públicas (public relations) is in Peru, can be defined differently from what public relations is for the United States or pubbliche relazioni for Italy.

Public relations has an earthly character and can be established in a different way according to where it is developed. To avoid confusion, let’s give a definition of public relations.

According to the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA): “Public Relations services consist of the strategic communication process that builds relationships mutually beneficial between organizations and their audiences.” If we analyze this carefully, we can focus on the purpose emphasized in this part: “the construction of mutually beneficial relationships.”

This word “mutually” imposes a model of listening and dialogue, which imply not only an ethical behavior of the organization but also the knowledge of their audiences. These audiences have different characteristics that are going to be defined by the culture to which they belong.

Cultural diversity is what makes us, this is our reason for being. This is what characterizes us and is known as the great challenge that public relations professionals have. Organizations thrive on their internal and external audiences and that is why it is so important to know how to identify them in depth. Today more than ever we must update and adapt to changes because these will not stop, they are a product of the globalized world in which we live.

–

Arnold Suarez is a senior studying Public Relations at Universidad San Martín de Porres (USMP) in Peru, he serves as International Ambassador in his chapter.
