The brand created an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dA5Yq1DLSmQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which if you haven\u2019t seen, involved Kendall Jenner solving world peace by handing a cop a Pepsi during a protest. This attempt to produce meaningful content with a unifying message failed miserably. Yet, Heineken just put out a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8wYXw4K0A3g\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commercial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a similar message of unifying consumers over a beverage and a majority of audiences are responding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positively. Why is that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8005  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame.png\" alt=\"a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame\" width=\"558\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame.png 716w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame-100x50.png 100w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/a-heineken-commercial-puts-pepsis-protest-ad-to-shame-200x100.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Heineken\u2019s ad, two strangers with opposite views on climate change, feminism and transgender rights meet and are made to hear out each other\u2019s respective views. This kind of subject matter is impossible to begin to discuss within\u00a0the timeframe of a beer commercial. However, the encouragement of dialogue was a responsible way to address unification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercials that attempt to address societal ills, which companies themselves have no true interest in fixing, should aim to start more important conversations about social predicaments rather than minimizing protest movements. Here are some tips for producing mindful content in this activist era:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Grab audiences\u2019 attention in a novel yet respectful manner. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to take enough of a chance to make the ad one which evokes emotion and awe while remaining mindful of your words and how they relate to your intended message and all audiences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Keep the message simple and meaningful.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your product is most likely not the answer to peace and harmony but can be the tool or product consumed during important conversations. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Authenticity succeeds.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When dealing with human emotions and celebrating differences, people want to see other real people in order to feel true empathy. This is not attainable without a knowledge and understanding of various cultures and communities. Appropriate research must be done beforehand.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heineken ad isn\u2019t perfect. In a sense, the people\u2019s views that are included are normalizing viewpoints that should not be accepted nor tolerated. However, the brand message \u2018Open Your World\u2019 promotes the idea that divided people can begin to open up when they find a shared connection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, in this intensely social environment, activism is a way to show company values. However, only the companies with a solid understanding of their beliefs and appropriate research will come across as genuine and mature. Commercials can play a role in facilitating positive change, but when it comes the corporation\u2019s responsibility of knowing their place, Heineken flourished and Pepsi failed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brittany O\u2019Connell is a junior interpersonal major at the University of Delaware with an advertising minor and public relations concentration.
