{"id":7734,"date":"2017-01-17T08:00:57","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T13:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/?p=7734"},"modified":"2018-08-08T11:12:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-08T15:12:01","slug":"professionals-students-make-champions-two-way-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/index.php\/2017\/01\/17\/professionals-students-make-champions-two-way-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Professionals and Students Make Champions for PRSSA a Two-Way Street of Mutual Career Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7735\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MaryBethWest-1-Nov.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7735\" src=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MaryBethWest-1-Nov-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo courtesy of Mary Beth West, APR. \" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MaryBethWest-1-Nov-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MaryBethWest-1-Nov-72x100.jpg 72w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MaryBethWest-1-Nov-143x200.jpg 143w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MaryBethWest-1-Nov.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Mary Beth West, APR.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my earliest career mentors (who also influenced my career-long involvement in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/champions.prsa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Champions for PRSSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DaveBicofsky\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Bicofsky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taught me early on that effective mentoring is a two-way relationship between mentor and prot\u00e9g\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirteen years ago, we even co-wrote a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Relations Tactics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article on the subject, \u201cTwo Sides of the Mentoring Process,\u201d wherein we each penned our perspectives on what mentors and prot\u00e9g\u00e9s alike hopefully do well \u2014 but sometimes do wrong \u2014 toward making mentoring effective for both parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all boils down to setting balanced expectations \u2014 as well as each person bringing a genuine and mutual respect, care and sense of contribution to the relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I liken mentoring to investing in the stock market\u2026 its greatest value is generally realized with steady contributions over time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And indeed, Dave\u2019s and my mentoring relationship is now more than 20 years strong now, and with it, a true friendship took root long ago with my husband and me counting Dave and his wife among our closest family friends. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave paid me a compliment many years ago that the tables had turned and he actually was getting good advice from me&#8230; which couldn\u2019t have come to me as higher praise. But then, that\u2019s what can happen when you\u2019re mentored by one of the very best!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Champions for PRSSA started in large part as a scholarship program for PRSSA students. Each member of Champions pays annual dues of $50 that go toward Chapter development honors and scholarships, which are awarded on a competitive basis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we also want students and new professionals to utilize Champions members as resources to benefit any PRSSA student or PRSA new professional, for advice, career development, and yes, long-term mentorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I urge all PRSA professionals who care about the future of the profession <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/champions.prsa.org\/who-we-are\/#become-a-champion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to join Champions for PRSSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make themselves available as mentors. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also urge PRSSA students and new professionals to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/champions.prsa.org\/champion-directory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check out the Champions directory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, find a professional whose career bio interests them, and reach out with your questions to get a dialogue going. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geteverwise.com\/mentoring\/from-oprah-to-churchill-20-inspiring-mentoring-quotes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favorite quotes about mentoring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is this one by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winstonchurchill.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winston Churchill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cWe make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.\u201d Early in our careers, it\u2019s quite alright to benefit more so from the receipt of what mentorship offers, but very soon, it\u2019s equally important to return the favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Beth West, APR, serves as a co-chair of Champions for PRSSA.
