The cups, featuring a mosaic of hundreds of people drawn in one continuous stroke by artist Shogo Ota, were meant to promote unity of people at a time of turmoil in the country but faced mixed feelings from the public. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe green cup and the design represent the connections Starbucks has as a community with its partners (employees) and customers,\u201d said Howard Schultz, chairman and CEO in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.starbucks.com\/news\/starbucks-green-cup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> post. \u201cDuring a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first issue Starbucks ran into was that people thought the limited edition cup was a new look for the holiday cup for the next two months. The cups also faced some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/prnewser\/starbucks-brewing-up-drama-over-its-holiday-red-cups\/119161\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year because people wanted them to be more representative of Christmas. People were anticipating a red cup with more holiday relation \u2014 even though holiday colors are red and green. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, people also viewed the cups as a political statement that did not match the environment within the United States. At a time when people were going to make different decisions on election day, the cups promoted unity and being together when that was not the case for many. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the criticisms, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1414371\/pr-pros-outraged-starbucks-green-cups-grow-cup-up\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public relations professionals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called for the public to \u201cgrow the cup up\u201d and appreciate the idea behind the limited edition cups. Some professionals called for the public to focus on the unity and stories of people behind the unity. Others called for people to focus on the artist and the work behind the cups. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the emotion-filled week, Starbucks premiered their highly anticipated <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2016\/11\/09\/starbucks-new-holiday-cups-hope-add-cheer-dreary-times\/93565662\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holiday cups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the world kept spinning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yara Ismail is a junior studying public relations and advertising at DePaul University in Chicago.
