Former presidents Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt adhered (whether subliminally or intentionally) to the adage: \u201csimple-relevant-repetitious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two quotes, which have lived on for more than half a century are Roosevelt\u2019s \u201cToday is a day that will live in infamy,\u201d responding to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and JFK\u2019s \u201cAsk not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,\u201d from his inaugural address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming a good writer takes practice. Becoming an excellent writer takes experience. Earning the reputation of being an excellent strategic (and persuasive) writer takes both. Writing is effective<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only when the transmitted message evokes the intended response from the receiver, which is a partial definition of clarity. Strategic communicators strengthen their position by becoming their organization\u2019s writing resource \u2014 helping colleagues understand the value of writing copy that gets read and achieves its objectives \u2014 changing, maintaining or reinforcing behavior. That is why we get paid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some might argue that strategic writers must embellish to persuade, look no further than the daily newspaper (traditional or online) to prove them wrong. Strategic writers are not novelists. That doesn\u2019t preclude using dynamic, action verbs \u2014 words \u2014 that (in editors\u2019 terms) make a story move. Avoid using so-called \u201cweasel\u201d words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategic writers must be persuasive in crafting and delivering an organization\u2019s key message points (KMPs). Excellent writers are adept at preparing news releases, media advisories, fact sheets, backgrounders, op-eds, pitch letters, position papers, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFL Films<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founder Ed Sabol and CBS 60 Minutes founding producer Don Hewitt built their success on four words:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTell me a story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some rules followed by the best writers \u2014 journalists and strategic writers \u2014 compliments of the \u201cWriters Digest School\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prefer the plain word to the fancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prefer the familiar word to the unfamiliar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prefer nouns and verbs to adjectives and adverbs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prefer picture nouns and action verbs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never use a long word when a short one will do as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master the simple declarative sentence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prefer the simple sentence to the complicated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vary your sentence length.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put the words you want to emphasize at the beginning or end of your sentence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the active voice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put statements in a positive form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use short paragraphs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut needless words, sentences and paragraphs. (Better writing through self-editing.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use plain, conversational language. Write like you talk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid imitation. Write in your natural style.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write clearly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid jargon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write to be understood \u2014 not to impress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Associated Press Broadcast Stylebook <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in your \u201ctoolbox.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revise and rewrite \u2014 edit, edit, edit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Re-check for spelling, grammar, sentence structure, syntax and punctuation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If public relations and strategic communicators follow Sabol and Hewitt\u2019s credo and the above rules, their goals will be achieved and professional success will follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M.
