Throughout the day, speakers presented on a variety of issues related to the current state of the public relations industry and how we need to incorporate social media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>It\u2019s About Social, Not Media<\/strong><br \/>\nSocial media consultant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.convinceandconvert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Baer<\/a> kicked off the conference with an enlightening presentation focused on the idea that every customer has become a reporter through social media. Social media earns the right to promote because we all choose our social media relationships \u2013 we have the power to click \u201cunfollow\u201d when we don\u2019t care for someone\u2019s tweets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>#GetSocial4Japan Tweet Drive<\/strong><br \/>\nTaking social media a step further for the greater good is <a href=\"http:\/\/kratzpr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harrison Kratz<\/a>, Tweet Drive founder. We were able to spend the evening with Harrison as we donated to Japan\u2019s relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Stinking Thrategically: How to Start Your Communications Career Ahead of the Curve<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cWhat are we trying to accomplish?\u201d is a question social media expert <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialmediaexplorer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Falls<\/a> said is the key to thinking strategically. Don\u2019t be a list \u201cdo-er\u201d and focus on the tasks; rather, see and seize all opportunities by focusing on what needs to be accomplished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Case Studies from the Pros<\/strong><br \/>\nLinhart PR digital media leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linhartpr.com\/about-us\/team\/paula-berg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Berg<\/a> and MindFrame principal <a href=\"http:\/\/kylelacy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Lacy<\/a> shared their experiences on how using social media has affected them in their careers. Berg advised attendees to never miss an opportunity to lead social media conversation. She also emphasized the importance of taking the opportunity to state your position clearly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lacy emphasized the power of stories. Stories give context and connect you with someone, which can be powerful for a brand. Stories inspire more people to action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Social Media Hot Topics Panel<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat is appropriate social media etiquette? It is simple, said Lacy. Just be yourself. Do you really want to work for someone who doesn\u2019t accept you for who you are? Have some common sense though and take the advice of Lacy, \u201cDon\u2019t tweet between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Directing the Social Change Whirlwind From the Inside<\/strong><br \/>\nThe conference ended with Michael Herman, recipient of the PRSA Gold Anvil for Lifetime Career Achievement in 2009. Herman left us with some words of wisdom.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Never      miss an opportunity to keep your mouth shut. You don\u2019t learn anything if      you\u2019re talking.<\/li>\n<li>Value      people and use things. Don\u2019t use people and value things.<\/li>\n<li>Watch,      listen and learn. You\u2019re going to make mistakes. You can learn from      negative experiences, too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/johnsonl6\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Johnson<\/a> is PRSSA Chapter President at Northern Kentucky University.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Did you attend Indiana University\u2019s event?
