So many participated, the event transcript totaled 303 pages! Here are some highlights from the chat:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question 1: What are the pros and cons: large vs. small agencies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pros and cons depend on what you plan to learn from the position. But in general, participants agreed that large agencies often provide opportunities for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Big client projects<\/li>\n<li>Top public relations mentors<\/li>\n<li>High-end tools<\/li>\n<li>Learning opportunities in a variety of sectors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mid-sized agencies may provide parts of both worlds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Big name clients<\/li>\n<li>Small agency feel so you get to know everyone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Small agencies can offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Less team members so more opportunities for greater responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>More opportunities to make your voice heard<\/li>\n<li>Increased spotlight (good and bad) on your contributions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cons for big agencies include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Competition<\/li>\n<li>Potential complex corporate politics and structure<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes increased pressure for billable hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cons for smaller firms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tend to pay less<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes have fewer resources<\/li>\n<li>Compete against bigger firms for clients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Question 2: What is the one life or work skill you find most students lack, that if fixed, could help them better succeed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Listening<\/li>\n<li>Better interpersonal communication and using the phone \u2013 not just email<\/li>\n<li>Writing skills<\/li>\n<li>Knowing how to handle constructive criticism<\/li>\n<li>Look at the overall picture versus the short-term result<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be overly familiar when first meeting someone via social media \u2013 do not assume you are instant friends<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to how others respond to you<\/li>\n<li>Business implications and strategic thinking<\/li>\n<li>Organization and time management skills<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s OK not to know the answer<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to evaluate and report<\/li>\n<li>Behaviors online and off can impact your professional image<\/li>\n<li>Patience is key<\/li>\n<li>Speak up \u2013 your opinion is valuable, too<\/li>\n<li>Take a general mix of business courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Question 3: What can students do to potentially advance faster?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make connections<\/li>\n<li>Work hard<\/li>\n<li>Secure results<\/li>\n<li>Learn to do the job above you and the job below you<\/li>\n<li>Be a team player<\/li>\n<li>Worry more about the skills you\u2019re learning and how you\u2019re growing \u2013 not your title<\/li>\n<li>Focus your energy on the job, not the promotion<\/li>\n<li>Become an expert on a much-needed skill<\/li>\n<li>Work every day like you\u2019re leaving for a two-week vacation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Question 4: What are some important publications and journals (online and print) public relations students should read?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Print<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Newspapers<\/li>\n<li><em>PR Week <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Harvard Business Review <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Trade publications for your career interests<\/li>\n<li>PRSA <em>Tactics<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>New York Times<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Online<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set up alerts for various topics, not just publications<\/li>\n<li>Mashable<\/li>\n<li>PR Breakfast Club<\/li>\n<li>Mediabistro<\/li>\n<li>Bulldog Reporter<\/li>\n<li>Holmes Report<\/li>\n<li>O\u2019Dwyer\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>Culpwrit<\/li>\n<li>CNN<\/li>\n<li>BBC<\/li>\n<li>Social Media Explorer<\/li>\n<li>Ragan.com<\/li>\n<li>Wall Street Journal blogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Question 5: What are some computer software\/programs employers want interns and entry-level candidates to know?
