Most people don\u2019t know what it is, so their conceptions of the profession are all over the place. All public relations students have experienced that awkward moment when you\u2019re stumbling over your words at the family Thanksgiving table trying to explain how public relations has evolved beyond \u201cspin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7003\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/giphy-6.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7003\" src=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/giphy-6.gif\" alt=\"Courtesy of giphy.com.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of giphy.com.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe people\u2019s ideas are derived from poor examples on TV or in the news or \u2014 gasp \u2014 from our profession\u2019s past mishaps, but the reality is that public relations is not easy to explain. It\u2019s a diverse industry, and it\u2019s changed a lot over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During my time as PRSSA National President, I\u2019ve explained time and time again what public relations is, how the industry is shifting and that solid practitioners actually do adhere to the PRSA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prsa.org\/aboutprsa\/ethics\/codeenglish\/#.V0NUuBUrL-Y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code of Ethics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While PRSA provides a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prsa.org\/aboutprsa\/publicrelationsdefined\/#.V0NcHRUrL-Y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sufficient definition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of public relations that those familiar with the industry understand, it\u2019s important to me that we know how to put it into terms that everyone can understand \u2014 our moms, our friends, our neighbors and our peers. As I get ready to transition out of my position, I want to help engage our members to be prepared to answer \u2014 in layman\u2019s terms \u2014 the question they\u2019re bound to get asked sooner or later: \u201cWhat is public relations?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of the next few weeks, be on the lookout for Progressions posts, graphics and videos featuring the hashtag #thisispublicrelations that will shed some light on this crucial question.
