{"id":691,"date":"2011-03-26T08:10:27","date_gmt":"2011-03-26T14:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/?p=691"},"modified":"2011-04-21T20:38:08","modified_gmt":"2011-04-22T02:38:08","slug":"pr-where-u-r","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/index.php\/2011\/03\/26\/pr-where-u-r\/","title":{"rendered":"PR Where U R"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During this year\u2019s spring break, I was fortunate enough to further my knowledge in public relations by attending the Georgia Southern University Regional Activity <a href=\"http:\/\/prwhereur.wordpress.com\/\">\u201cPR Where U R\u201d<\/a> in Statesboro, Ga. Students from Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia, Alabama and Kentucky attended the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPR Where U R\u201d was a weekend full of cutting-edge information about the latest digital media platforms, as well as how to use social and digital media in public relations. The managing partner of CityTrex LLC, Burton Sauls, stressed the importance of QR codes. QR codes are barcodes containing addresses and\u00a0URLs that may appear on any object providing information, such as a magazine, business card or sign. Smartphones can scan QR codes and the information will be displayed. Sauls also discussed \u201cgeocaching\u201d \u2014 an outdoor activity in which participants use a\u00a0GPS\u00a0receiver to hide and seek containers, called &#8220;geocaches,&#8221; or &#8220;caches,&#8221; anywhere in the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning: 9 Lessons for Social Media Domination Courtesy of Bat-Sh*t Crazy Charlie Sheen,\u201d was an amazing session. The speaker, Bonnie Upright, APR, chief of strategic partnerships for Duval County Public Schools, used Charlie Sheen to explain the importance of good clients. Tips she gave during her session included: be transparent, establish good credibility, listen to clients, use social media to research competition, think like a reporter and be authentic. She also suggested we check out information from <a href=\"http:\/\/helpaprproout.com\/\">Help a PR Pro Out<\/a> (@HAPPO), a community-based effort to help those seeking jobs in the public relations industry.<\/p>\n<p>Danny Devriendt, executive vice president digital and social media strategist for Porter Novelli, joined us via Skype and provided tips about being adaptable to change, creating lasting relationships using digital media and being efficient.<\/p>\n<p>The final session, \u201cAn \u2018Extreme\u2019 Lesson in Public Relations,\u201d by Neilie Dunn, director of marketing for J.T. Turner Construction, stressed that persistence is key.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Shankman, founder of HARO and founder and CEO of The Geek Factory, Inc., gave the keynote address. Shankman shared his <a href=\"http:\/\/practicalissues.wordpress.com\/2011\/03\/05\/peter-shankmans-4-rules-of-social-media\/\">four rules of social media<\/a>: transparency, relevance, brevity and top of mind. He also introduced us to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poken.com\/\">Poken<\/a>, which utilizes a proprietary\u00a0Near Field Communication\u00a0technology to allow the exchange of\u00a0online social networking\u00a0data between two\u00a0keychain\u00a0accessories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPR Where U R\u201d was an invaluable experience that I will never forget.<\/p>\n<p><em>Erica Ludwig is a student at Georgia State University.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Did you attend Georgia Southern University\u2019s event?
