Courtesy of PRSA and Albert Chau.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Do What You Love and You Will Never Work a Day in Your Life<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Event:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Weather or Not: Making Connections in the Dynamic Media World <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Presenter:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jim Cantore, Host and Meteorologist, The Weather Channel<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recap:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When Jim Cantore was in high school, in the event of snow, he would stay up all night to shovel his driveway so that his mom could go to work in the morning. Because he was a \u201cfreak when it snowed,\u201dhis father encouraged him to pursue weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flash forward to present day and Cantore\u2019s passion for weather is still apparent. His enthusiasm is evidenced by his live reactions to \u201cthunder snow,\u201d a thunderstorm during a snowstorm, and his distaste for the handling of the coverage of live weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Cantore began working in weather pre-social media, he has experienced the takeover of the social phenomenon. Courtesy of PRSA and Ellen Levitt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Use Your Skills to Make an Impact<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Event:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PRSA General Session<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Presenter:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> John Lewis, U.S. Congressman and Civil Rights Leader<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recap:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Congressman John Lewis grew up in rural Alabama. Being raised in the segregated south, it wasn\u2019t long before Lewis began to ask questions. He was told to avoid making trouble; to simply do as he was told.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Martin Luther King Jr. emerged in 1955, Lewis got in the way. He got in trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday March 7, 1965, Lewis marched for the right of the African American vote. The protestors were met with hostility from law enforcement, but the media spread the message around the world. As a result, hundreds of people across America joined the protest, ultimately leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without communication, \u201cThe civil rights movement would have been like a bird without wings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this demonstrated the power of storytelling and spreading messages, Lewis urged those in attendance to use their skills to \u201ccall the citizens of the world to a higher calling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaways:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use what you have to communicate effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMake it plain, make it real.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get in the way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As public relations professionals, we have a moral obligation to tell a story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never give up.
