But what happens when an ethical dilemma actually arises in the workplace? Navigating the ins and outs of propriety at internships is difficult; thus, dealing with unethical or questionable practices takes forethought, commitment to upholding the ethical values of the industry and good advisers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Think about ethics beforehand<br \/>\n<\/b>According to Robert Pritchard, National PRSSA Faculty Adviser, most ethical dilemmas present themselves innocently. For example, billing a client for your unpaid work can seem like no big deal on the surface, but becomes a serious dilemma when considering the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prsa.org\/AboutPRSA\/Ethics\/CodeEnglish#.UhqnbBZFtFI\">PRSA values of honesty and fairness<\/a>. Both of these require public relations practitioners to operate fairly and honestly while working on behalf of clients.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4144\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Intern-Talk_Sept.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4144\" alt=\"Photo courtesy of Taolife Studio \" src=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Intern-Talk_Sept-300x215.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Intern-Talk_Sept-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Intern-Talk_Sept-100x71.png 100w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Intern-Talk_Sept-200x143.png 200w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Intern-Talk_Sept.png 976w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Taolife Studio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to the fact that ethical dilemmas can be presented as innocent situations, it\u2019s important that you think through your personal values, as well as the values of the public relations profession, before beginning an internship or getting into an ethically questionable situation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Use the PRSA Code of Ethics as a framework<br \/>\n<\/b>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prsa.org\/AboutPRSA\/Ethics\/CodeEnglish\/#.Uho_UhZFvFI\">PRSA Code of Ethics<\/a> offers an excellent framework for understanding and working through ethical dilemmas that arise during internships. \u201cMost of our ethical dilemmas are not the result of wanting to do wrong, but of a conflict between obligations and responsibilities,\u201d says Pritchard. The Code of Ethics can help you understand where your responsibilities to yourself and the profession lie and help you handle the dilemma well once it arises.<\/p>\n<p><b>Talk to a supervisor or mentor<br \/>\n<\/b>As learning and growing young professionals, it\u2019s normal not to have all the answers. It shows maturity to approach a supervisor or mentor when you cannot deal with an issue singlehandedly or when you are simply unsure if a situation is unethical. Your supervisor or mentor will be able to guide you through the unethical situation or offer advice on how you should approach it.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, however, Pritchard offers this advice to students: \u201cMost of the time, if it doesn\u2019t feel right, it probably isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIntern Talk\u201d is a monthly guest column produced by Ellie Boggs, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prssa.org\/about\/Leadership\/National_Committee\/CareerServices\/\">vice president of career services<\/a>.
