I was introduced to public relations in a high school speech class and became immediately and immensely intrigued. During freshman orientation at Auburn, I learned that public relations is a growing field in the fashion industry, so I picked up a major in public relations as well as apparel merchandising.<\/p>\n<p>The summer following my junior year, I completed an in-house public relations internship with a women\u2019s contemporary clothing designer in New York City. I was the sole public relations intern in the company and also assisted the sales team before the other interns started for the summer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Fashion PR\" src=\"http:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Fashion-PR1-100x75.jpg\" alt=\"Fashion PR\" width=\"158\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Som<\/strong><strong>e of my responsibilities as a public relations intern <\/strong><strong>were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Running clothes across the city to magazine editors for photo shoots.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lending clothes to stylists for movie shoots.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keeping track of press placements.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Helping run the sample sales or pop-up shops, including set up, break down, inventory and promotion.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pitching stories and events to short and long-lead press.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Writing press releases for events.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Writing collateral for the designer\u2019s collection, which is what the whole collection revolves around.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Merchandising pieces from individual collections together to figure out what styles we could drop or if we needed more clothes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assisting in the photo shoots for collections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Breaking into the industry: Working in fashion public relations is fun, fast-paced and highly competitive. It takes a thick skin and a sharp eye for details. Staying in front of the trends is imperative for success and being able to anticipate what magazines are looking for is a skill that will serve you well. Additionally, pay attention to social media sites \u2013 e.g., Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest. \u2013 because those are the easiest, most cost-efficient ways to reach out to your biggest brand advocates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Some advice for aspiring fashion public relations professio<\/strong><strong>nals on what to read for industry trends:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Vogue<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 W<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fashion blogs (Among my favorites are <a title=\"the Sartorialist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thesartorialist.com\/\">the Sartorialist<\/a>, <a title=\"Who What Wear\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whowhatwear.com\/blog\/\">Who What Wear<\/a>, <a title=\"Refinery29\" href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/\">Refinery29<\/a>, <a title=\"Stylelist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stylelist.com\/\">Stylelist<\/a> and <a title=\"Into the Gloss\" href=\"http:\/\/intothegloss.com\/\">Into the Gloss<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While I no longer work in the fashion industry, I value my time there because it helped me develop and hone a variety of skills I still use today in professional services public relations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Rebecca Dill is an account executive at Poston Communications, an Atlanta-based public relations agency focused on professional services companies including law, accounting, architecture, associations, construction and interior design. A graduate of Auburn University, Dill holds a Bachelor of Arts in public relations and a Bachelor of Science in Apparel Merchandising.
