{"id":2316,"date":"2012-04-19T12:56:29","date_gmt":"2012-04-19T18:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/?p=2316"},"modified":"2012-04-19T12:56:29","modified_gmt":"2012-04-19T18:56:29","slug":"public-relations-when-two-worlds-collide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/index.php\/2012\/04\/19\/public-relations-when-two-worlds-collide\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Relations: When Two Worlds Collide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Communications students came to the nation\u2019s capital on March 23-24 to learn the importance of traditional and new media in public relations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prssa.org\/events\/regional_conferences\/\">PRSSA Regional Conference,<\/a> \u201cWhen Two Worlds Collide: Bridging Online and Offline Communication,\u201d speakers and panelists with backgrounds in <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/index.php\/2011\/10\/24\/public-affairs-agency-view\/\">politics<\/a>, crisis communication, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/index.php\/2011\/11\/03\/creating-a-social-media-plan-for-your-firm\/\">social media<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/index.php\/2012\/01\/12\/sail-away-with-nonprofit-communications\/\">nonprofits<\/a> and more shared their stories and offered tips to help students face the ever-changing world of public relations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Members of the PRSSA Regional Conference host Chapter at American University compiled a list of the most important tips they learned from each session. These tips included:<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_2327\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 258px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Two-Worlds-Attendees.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2327 \" title=\"Two Worlds Attendees\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.prssa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Two-Worlds-Attendees.jpg\" alt=\"American University Regional Conference\" width=\"248\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Two-Worlds-Attendees.jpg 824w, https:\/\/progressions.prsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Two-Worlds-Attendees-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">\u2022\u00a0John Bell from Social@Ogilvy advised students to think as business leaders, not just communications majors, which is very important when creating a social media strategy.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Drew Hammill, press secretary for Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, told attendees not to be afraid to be creative, especially if they are trying to get the word out about an important but dry piece of information.<br \/>\n\u2022 During a crisis, communicate early, often and clearly. Plan, prepare and practice before the crisis. <strong><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0For political communication, be as well informed as possible. Speaker Dave Tamasi makes it a habit to read the main articles of every major newspaper before 7:30 a.m. each morning. <strong><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities with personal branding. Take on opportunities that you believe will highlight your skills and help further your career. <strong><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0When communicating with groups of people online, keep words and ideas as clear as possible. <strong><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 In sports or entertainment public relations in particular, be prepared to work hard, be competitive and move around from city to city. <strong><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Social media effectiveness can be measured for nonprofits by who is showing up to volunteer based on social media strategies. Use social media to inspire people to action instead of just encouraging them to comment or \u201clike\u201d statuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What advice would you give students breaking into the industry during the convergence of traditional and new media strategies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>This is a guest post compiled by members of <a href=\"http:\/\/auprssa.org\/\">American University PRSSA<\/a>.
