We are told to become doctors, lawyers or business professionals. We are told our drawings, crafts and artistic ideas are hobbies and won’t make us any money. With limited Asian representation in the public relations and communications field, it can be even harder to find the courage to continue proving that we deserve a seat at the table.

However, the power of the voiceless should never be underestimated. Today, many AAPI individuals are trailblazing paths to show younger Asian American generations that there is a place for them in the fast-evolving chaos of media, public relations and communications.

Soon Mee Kim dedicated over a decade of her career to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives on a global scale at top PR agencies.

Bill Imada co-founded IW Group, a minority-owned and operated agency that specializes in growing multicultural markets.

Goldie Chan is an up-and-coming leader who founded the Los Angeles-based social media strategy agency Warm Robots.

But the individual who has shaped my path toward becoming a successful PR practitioner the most is my mentor for the Indiana University Media School Ernie Pyle Scholars Class of 2026 cohort, Dr. Minjeong Kang. She has received international recognition through leading peer-reviewed journals for her research in the public relations field, and I am immensely grateful to have a professor who teaches with inclusion and empathy, as well as a mentor with whom I can relate to with identity struggles on a professional level.

The amazing part about PR and communications is that it is not limited to one demographic. There is an endless number of current and upcoming professionals from different backgrounds and experiences who can create PR strategies that resonate across audiences and cultures.

However, you don’t need to be part of a minority group in order to dedicate yourself to striving for inclusion and equality for all. The next time you are crafting strategies, campaigns or creative work, ask yourself these questions:

Who could be directly or indirectly impacted, or historically marginalized, by the topics involved in my campaign?

Do my target audiences primarily speak other languages, and can I translate my material accurately without losing meaning or creating misunderstandings?

Have I researched the cultures — including histories, values and practices — that my target audience may identify with?

Another way to grow into an inclusive PR practitioner is to expand your knowledge of multicultural communication. Here are a few ways to get started:

Take an international communications or marketing course if your school offers one.

Consider minoring or majoring in another language.

Consume more international media.

Attend cultural celebrations in your local community or on your campus, and make note of their advertising, pamphlets and social media promotions.

Talk to other minority students who are studying public relations or communications, and listen to their experiences with the intent to learn and become more inclusive. Ask how they think the media currently represents them and how representation could improve.

Remember, those who are Asian are not “just Asian.” They could represent multiple countries and deserve respect for the identities they carry and represent. I am not only Asian. I am Asian American. I am Vietnamese American. I am also a first-generation college student.

It is crucial that your audiences feel that same level of respect through your messaging. It is essential to learn both small and large ways we can continue to advocate for inclusion in our writing, campaigns and creative work.

Kathleen Tran is a senior at Indiana University studying journalism with a concentration in public relations and minors in psychology and marketing.
