From networking breakfasts to behind-the-scenes tours, each moment was packed with valuable lessons and unforgettable memories.

The Power of Mentorship

As I mingled with industry professionals during the Champions Breakfast, I quickly learned that mentorship is crucial in this field. Sitting at the same table as seasoned PR experts, I soaked up their insights on career development and the importance of knowing your worth. Jane Dvorak, APR, Fellow PRSA, emphasized that understanding our values is essential before stepping into the industry. This advice resonated deeply with me, as it reinforced the need to seek roles that align with my principles.

Embracing Mistakes

One of the most liberating realizations I had during the Conference was that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Listening to Kevin Saghy reminded me that taking risks and accepting failures can ultimately lead to growth. In an industry that constantly evolves, I now feel empowered to embrace missteps as stepping stones rather than setbacks.

Building a Diverse Network

My networking journey at ICON 2024 was exhilarating. Representing BYU PRSSA with almost 50 peers made quite an impression. I had the pleasure of connecting with fellow students, professionals, and even mentees. I realized that my network includes everyone in my circle—each interaction is a potential mentorship opportunity. I came back with a renewed commitment to become the leader I aspire to be, not just within my professional community but also among my peers.

Highlights of the Conference

One of the standout moments was touring Taco Bell HQ, which offered an exclusive glimpse into one of the strongest brands in the world. Our guide, Matt Prince, took us through test kitchens and sensory stations, revealing the intricate workings behind the brand. Listening to a panel of Taco Bell professionals share their passion for communication truly inspired me. It was evident that Taco Bell excels at engaging with its fans and building a global community.

Equally impactful were the sessions I attended. I learned dynamic presentation techniques using unconventional tools like beach balls and coloring books—yes, you read that right! These creative approaches opened my eyes to new ways of storytelling that can make communication more engaging.

A Bit of Fun

Between sessions, we had plenty of time for laughter and connection. From participating in TikTok challenges with other schools to enjoying lunches at the beach, I felt a sense of camaraderie that solidified my love for this industry. Knott’s Scary Farm was an exhilarating cap to our days, and I left with memories that will last a lifetime.

Taking Action

Returning to campus, I was filled with pride—not just for BYU winning the Outstanding Chapter of the Year award but also for all the new things I experienced. My immediate goal is to follow up on my Conference To-Do list. I’m crafting thank-you notes, building a spreadsheet of my network and being proactive on LinkedIn. I also plan to dive deeper into the PR world during my final year in school—attending PRSA seminars, engaging in Chapter activities and volunteering for new projects.

Maximizing Conference Experiences

For anyone preparing to attend a conference, here are a few takeaways from my ICON experience:

Be Proactive: Engage with professionals and peers. The insights and connections I gained will serve as a foundation for my career in public relations. I’m determined to carry this momentum forward, using my experiences to empower myself and those around me.

Reflecting on the C<s>c</s>onference, I am reminded of my newfound mantra: “Aim high and look for guides.” With this perspective, I am ready to embrace the future and everything it holds.

Natalie Aldous is a rising senior at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she is majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Tourism.
