I am the daughter of parents who didn’t have the opportunity to attend college, but worked tirelessly to ensure that I could become the first generation in my family to do so. During my first year of college, I felt very insecure and constantly questioned whether communications was really the right path for me. As it turns out, I just hadn’t discovered the wide world of public relations yet.

Then the pandemic hit. Suddenly I was taking classes from my room, staring at my laptop all day. The pandemic was undeniably devastating, not only in Peru, but worldwide. However, it also presented unexpected opportunities. During this time, I discovered the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and it opened doors I hadn’t even considered. The Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP) PRSSA Chapter provided a wide range of opportunities for its members, and that was a turning point for me.

When I decided to join USMP PRSSA, I had no idea how much it would change my perspective on everything related to my professional life. Becoming part of PRSSA allowed me to grow in every aspect as a leader, friend and communicator. It gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and explore parts of the communication field I didn’t even know existed because in Peru, being a public relations professional is not very common. In fact, it’s only recently, following the pandemic and many other crises (political, economic, and social), that our profession has gained much more relevance.

I’m truly grateful for all the people I met during my time in PRSSA. They saw potential in me when I couldn’t see it in myself. Their support and belief in my abilities pushed me to grow both personally and professionally. Thanks to those experiences and the support of my Chapter, I had the honor of becoming the president of USMP PRSSA in 2023. It was an achievement I never could have imagined reaching at the beginning of my college journey.

As president, I made the decision that Peru needed to be represented at ICON, especially since we hadn’t participated since 2019. I reached out to everyone who could help us make this happen. During that process, I learned the power of collaboration and the importance of perseverance. But it wasn’t just perseverance that was key — teamwork played an essential role as well. I was fortunate to have an incredibly supportive team and mentors by my side, always ready to step up and help.

After all of our hard work, I got the chance to attend ICON in Nashville, where I exchanged experiences with my peers, met amazing professionals, and learned so much from them. It was such an inspirational experience that opened my eyes to all the possibilities in our field. When I got back to Peru, I knew we had to work harder to encourage more members to attend and not miss out on these incredible opportunities to grow and learn more about what we do.

Now, our Peruvian Chapter has even more participation, not just in national events like Leadership Assembly or ICON, but also in PRSSA National Subcomittees. It makes me incredibly proud to see us collaborating more with the Society. It’s wonderful to witness how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown as a Chapter.

As the immediate past president of the USMP Chapter, I believe our Chapter is constantly working to enhance and enrich the experience for our members, and helping them grasp the true power of public relations. In Peru, the situation is similar. PR professionals are working really hard to help others understand that we are more than just press release writers. We serve as connectors between people and organizations, and we play a vital role in driving positive change.

Antonella Barreda Vargas is a Public Relations and Advertising graduate from Universidad de San Martín de Porres in Lima, Peru.
