Nevertheless, although it’s not a straightforward process, it doesn’t mean it’s unachievable. The PRSSA Sagrado Chapter is a clear embodiment of this notion.

The PRSSA Sagrado Chapter was established in 2019, which made it the first one in Puerto Rico. Although it had a brief period of inactivity due to the pandemic, in 2022, it managed to resurface as the only active Chapter in the Caribbean.

Amongst many opportunities and experiences that helped kickstart our growth as a Chapter, competing alongside our fellow Latin American counterparts was probably the biggest highlight. This past semester, we had the opportunity to participate in the 2023 Latin American Challenge, which consists of creating a PR plan to solve an issue that aligns with DEI values through strategic communications efforts.

Frankly, it being our first time competing was intimidating enough, but having to host it added a whole new layer. Despite our apprehensiveness, we managed to go into it with a positive mindset. Our main goal was not to win, it was to represent and participate.

Being there was especially important to us as a Chapter, considering we couldn’t participate in the 2022 edition due to hurricane Fiona. It was a truly devastating moment for us, especially since we were looking forward to it, and had already started working on our submission. Regardless, we had our wellbeing and recovery to focus on. We made sure to maintain that same drive and enthusiasm to make our future participation possible.

Although we didn’t bring a first place victory to our Chapter, I can confidently say that the process was more rewarding than the outcome. The experience of collaborating as a team and creating a more personal connection with our peers carried so much more worth than the placement we achieved. Moreover, everything we learned through mentorship and feedback was incredibly enriching to our whole team of aspiring PR pros.

Lastly, one of the best parts of participating in the challenge was being able to connect with PRSSA peers on an international level. As a Latin American Chapter, one of our many goals is to create tight-knit connections with our Argentinian, Colombian and Peruvian peers. The Challenge served as a brilliant way to bring us all together and provide us a space to support and learn from each other.

PRSSA Sagrado Chapter’s participation was definitely a milestone worth celebrating. It has opened a new tier of confidence in our skills and drive within our team to further achieve success. As a Chapter, there is so much more growth to be welcomed and challenges to be overcome.

—

Joeyce García Burgos is a sophomore at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in Puerto Rico.
