Although there is much overlap between these groups, public relations is often overlooked, and its benefits are forgotten. One aspect of PR that must never be forgotten, however, is its ability to help others.

Many clients are often looking to spread the word about an important topic. As a PR professional, you have the opportunity to make a difference in the world by delivering a clear message to the right audiences. This can range from advocating for minority groups to shining a light on an important political topic that you are passionate about.

PR professionals are always looking for ways to make their clients stand out. Many organizations have large platforms that can influence their audiences, which can be used to positively influence their communities. Using the voice of an organization to discuss the importance of topics such as diversity and inclusion can then create space for conversations within communities about the need for more attention on these issues.

There are many different ways that public relations workers can use these platforms for their community. For example, a PR firm may be working with an organization that is looking to become more environmentally friendly. With this, they may create a campaign about “going green.” This could be helping the organization gain some traction while also promoting sustainability. A career in public relations requires the knowledge of how to form a connection between an organization and its community. You act as a “middleman” that makes sure an organization’s message is received well. You are also the one designing how this message will get out to the public. This could come in the form of campaigns that are helping a certain group. In public relations, you also want your campaign to be creative enough to make an impact.

Public relations does much more than meets the eye. In this field, you have the freedom to control how you want to use your skills. With these skills, you can make the world a better place.

Rowan Fossella, a member of the PRSSA 2022-2023 Publications Committee, is a sophomore at Villanova University majoring in communications with a public relations concentration.
