It’s an incredible achievement and so exciting that you’ll be entering what we call “the big-kid world.” Whether you know your exact next steps or are still figuring it all out, here are three things that you can do right now to prepare for this exciting new chapter.

Update your LinkedIn profile.

We always think about updating our LinkedIn profile when we get a new internship or opportunity but don’t forget to update it now that you’ve graduated. Be sure to update your education section with any final awards or achievements. And let your network know where you’re headed next. Not quite sure of your next direction? Let your network know that you’re looking for opportunities and give a brief recap of all you’ve accomplished during your college years.

Bonus: Ask your collegiate professors or internship supervisors to write you a recommendation on LinkedIn. These recommendations will help your future employers learn a little bit more about who you are from a different perspective.

Join a professional community in your city.

Especially if you’re moving to a new city, finding a community can be hard without the structure of college. Being in a new place or finding your way in a new role in the same city is a great opportunity to join a professional community. Consider joining the local PRSA Chapter and the PRSA New Pros Section. This is a place that you’ll be able to learn from those around you and grow your community at the same time.

Find something that inspires you outside of your job.

It can be incredibly easy to let work consume your entire life, especially as young professionals trying to prove ourselves. We cannot forget to take time for ourselves and spend some of our energy pursuing other things we love. Whether it’s reading, starting a blog, painting, or anything else, find something that you can claim entirely as your own. This is the perfect first step in maintaining a good work-life balance.

Rachel Meltzer is a senior at the University of Oklahoma studying public relations and arts management & entrepreneurship.
